Gunmen storm Buhari's Nephew's residence

Unknown gunmen stormed the Dan Amar Road residence of Mallam Mamman Daura, the influential nephew of president Muhammadu Buhari and his closest confidant about 9 a.m in Kaduna and abducted Ambassador Bagudu Hirse.

Hirse, a former minister of State for foreign Affairs and one time Nigeria's Ambassador to Namibia, was the gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party[LP] in Plateau state in 2015 general elections. According to a family source, the President's Chief of staff, Mallam Abba Kyari and the former secretary to the government of the federation[SGF], Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, were all at Daura's residence when the gunmen shot their way into the house.

The source who does not want to be named , said that the security details of the members of the president's kitchen cabinet all scurried for cover when the gunmen struck, while Daura and his guests laid down on the bare floor. The source added that Ambassador Hirse had gone to Daura's house in order to condole with him over the death of Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki, the 8th Sultan of Sokoto and Daura;s father-in-law, when the attackers struck.

They stormed the house and started shooting sporadically as people were offloading cartons of juice and soft drinks from Hirse's utility Jeep, while the Ambassador was standing by the car. One of the gunmen shot him in the leg and took him away.

However, another source said that Hirse was trailed to Daura's gate and that the attackers blocked him at the gate and not inside the house as the previous source claimed. Similarly, the Police public relation officer of Kaduna state command[PPRO] ASP Aliyu Usman, confirmed Hirse's kidnap, but also said it happened along Daura Dan Amar Road and not in the residence as alleged.

About 10 minutes after the attackers had fled, Daura's younger brother, who is a security officer, arrived the scene armed to the teeth, the source added that he was angry over the security lapse that gave the attackers the loophole to even shoot their way into Daura's residence.

Delta Technicians, Onitsha Businessman battle over mechanic village.

Barely two weeks after the Delta state government embarked on the construction of a mechanic village in Asaba, the state capital, crisis has erupted over sales of forms to highest bidders.

Association of the Auto-Mobile Technicians, Delta state chapter, has raised the alarm that business moguls from neighbouring Onitsha market in Anambra state had hijacked the whole thing. But the special executive Assistant to the Governor on investment, Mr. Paul Nmah said it was the figment of imagination of the Association.

While the association decried a move by the state government to sell the mechanic village, under contraction without following the terms of agreement with the association. Nmah said the place was been built for artisans who would do genuine business. The association's chairman, Mr. Ifeanyi Abanum, who lamented that the pact the association had with the governor of the state, Ifeanyi Okowa, had been inexplicably jettisoned, wondering why the occupancy had been politicized. He said: "We have heard that forms are already on sale, and that was not our agreement with the governor prior to the take off of the construction of the mechanic village." We agreed that the machanic village would be built and allocated to the mambers of the association on a subsidized price, but now they have started selling the form for the market to other people who were not part of the initial negotiation. We own the land. It was donated by the community to the auto-mobile technicians to be used as mechanic village in 1982. So, it is not government land.

The state government entered into partnership with a private firm to build the mechanic village and transfer to government that will in turn deal with us. That was the agreement we had and not the madness going on now."

Students sit on bare floor as adminstrator locks away furniture

Most of them use prayer mats to protect their white tops from the floor dust, while others come to classes with extra wrappers to spread on the floor.

Incidentally, the state government has made provision of furniture for them, but the school administrator in an unexplainable manner, locked up 200 sets of classroom furniture unattended to and left to rot away. However, the students; suffering came to an end last week when the committee set up by Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal to implement the state of emergency declared in education sector, visited the school.

The visit was facilitated by the need to individually assess problems of various schools and to make recommendations to government on how best to address them. Upon visiting the Hafsat Ahmadu Bello Memorial Secondary School, Sokoto, students were seen taking lectures while sitting on bare floor. To our amazement, a few blocks away, 200 new classroom furniture were locked away unattended to. We immediately ordered that the furniture be arranged in the classes in need, and the school management was admonished to always prioritize the need of the students at all times." said Dr. Shadi Sabeh, who led members of the school needs Assessment sub-committee during the visit.
